What's the difference between a mentor and a coach?
Mar 11, 2025
As an entrepreneur in the beauty industry (also known as a 'beauty-preneur!), you may have heard the terms "Mentor" and "Coach" used interchangeably.
Here at Beauty Boss, I offer both services, as a way to meet my lovely clients where they are at in their business.
However, while both roles provide valuable support to business owners, I felt I should explain the distinct differences between the two, and how each role can help you navigate the challenges of running a beauty business.
BUSINESS MENTOR:
A Business Mentor is an experienced person who provides guidance, support, and advice to help you grow your business. Unlike a Coach, a Mentor will help you focus on specific skills or tasks within your business.
The biggest key difference between a Business Mentor and a Coach, is that a Mentor will be able to draw from their own direct experiences (ideally in the same industry) to help you make informed decisions and overcome any obstacles they know you are likely to face - in other words, a Mentor is someone who has ''been there and done that!''.
COACH:
A Coach (or Career Coach in my case) sits at the side of the business owner, to listen, and ultimately guides by asking questions; for their client to pull from within themselves...
Unlike Mentors, Coaches are more like soundboards, and confidants, They offer support, constructive criticism and challenge their clients in a considerate, thoughtful way.
Coaches use questioning to help their clients develop their own answers, acknowledging that solutions developed by themselves can often have more potential to be implemented.
Finally, personally, as a qualified coach, I help my clients look at the bigger picture, and help them develop a long-term strategy for the success of their business.
This is probably the perfect time to tell you about my brand new Mastermind.
It's where I have brought mentoring and coaching together, to offer the perfect blend of teachings.
